For UW instructors · SEED-AI 2026 research study

Write a clear AI-related course policy for your syllabus

Whether you plan to welcome, limit, or prohibit student use of AI, a clear course policy helps you articulate your expectations and helps students understand them. We are studying how best to support instructors in writing one.

What is this?

Teaching@UW encourages instructors to include an AI-related course policy in the syllabus and in assignment instructions, whether that policy defines how students may use AI, stipulates that students may not use AI, or is co-created with students. This research study, led by Ian Schnee (Philosophy) and Adrian KC Lee (Speech & Hearing Sciences), offers you structured support for writing or revising your own course-specific policy, and asks about your experience along the way.

What would I do?

  1. Sign up (about 1 minute). You will receive a personal link and participant code by email.
  2. Complete a short online survey about your views on AI in teaching (10 to 15 minutes).
  3. Work on an AI-related policy for one of your courses using the materials provided (20 to 40 minutes). You leave with a draft you can use.
  4. Complete a short follow-up survey (10 to 15 minutes).

Everything is online and self-paced. You can start whenever it suits you and return to your link to pick up where you left off.

Who can take part?

Any UW instructor, in any college or school, who teaches or is preparing to teach a course. You do not need an existing AI policy, and you do not need any experience with AI tools. Enrollment is limited to 100 participants.

What do I get?

There is no payment. We hope the time you spend saves you time on your syllabus, and you will have our sincere thanks for helping UW learn how to support instructors.
