Information About a UW Research Study
Evaluating the use of AI tools in higher education
What is this study about?
You are being asked to participate in a research study about whether a guided, AI-supported tool can help faculty think more clearly about AI in teaching and create more effective course policies. It is up to you to decide whether you want to participate. If you decide to enroll, you can stop participation at any time.
What will you be asked to do?
If you agree to be in this study, we will ask you to complete a series of online activities about how you think about and create course policies on student use of AI.
Step 1 — Pre-survey (~10–15 min): A short online survey about your current views on AI in teaching, your confidence in writing course policies, and your prior experience with AI tools. You may also be asked to upload an existing AI-related course policy, if you have one.
Step 2 — Study activity (~20–40 min): You will be assigned to one of two groups. One group will use an interactive, AI-supported tool that guides you through developing a course policy by asking about your teaching goals and providing suggested language that you can edit. The other group will review standard written materials, such as example policies and guidance documents.
Step 3 — Post-survey (~10–15 min): A second survey about your experience, including your updated views and confidence. You will also be asked to submit a new or revised course AI policy and respond to a few short hypothetical scenarios about how students might use AI in your course.
Optional — Focus group (~45–60 min): You may be invited to participate in an in-person or online focus group discussion. Participation is entirely optional.
Total time: approximately 45–75 minutes for the main activities, plus 45–60 minutes if you choose the optional focus group.
What will happen to the information you provide?
The information you provide will be kept confidential. We will store the data with a code instead of your name. We will keep a list that links the code to your name and will store it securely and separate from the data.
